A Cauvery-based drinking water scheme for Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts was begun in 2008 amid objections from Karnataka and launched in 2013.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi laid the foundation stone for the Hogenakkal Integrated Drinking Water Project on 26 February 2008. The project draws Cauvery water near Hogenakkal Falls to supply the fluoride-affected Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. It led to protests and objections in Karnataka over the use of the river and land near the border. The scheme was launched by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa through videoconferencing from Chennai on 29 May 2013.
