Cauvery River Authority set up

· New Delhi

The Union government set up the Cauvery River Authority, chaired by the Prime Minister with the chief ministers of the basin states, to implement the interim award.

In 1997 the Union government proposed a Cauvery River Authority with powers to take control of reservoirs in the basin states, but Karnataka opposed it as intruding on its jurisdiction. In 1998 the authority was set up with more limited powers, with the Prime Minister as chairperson and the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry as members. A Cauvery Monitoring Committee was formed to assist it. The authority was meant to oversee implementation of the tribunal's 1991 interim award, which Tamil Nadu had long sought to enforce.
