After an 1890 conference, the Madras Presidency and Mysore signed an agreement on the use of the Cauvery's waters.

A conference held in 1890 between the Madras Presidency and the Kingdom of Mysore led to an agreement signed in 1892 on the use of the Cauvery river. The agreement aimed to meet the irrigation needs of both sides. It became the basis for later arbitration when Mysore planned a dam at Kannambadi. The 1892 agreement, together with a later one in 1924, lies at the root of the Cauvery water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
