Periyar lease agreement with Travancore

A 999-year lease for the Periyar irrigation works, signed by Travancore and the Secretary of State for India, later underpinned the Mullaperiyar dispute.
The Secretary of State for India and Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, Maharaja of Travancore, signed a 999-year lease indenture for the Periyar Irrigation Works on 29 October 1886. Under its terms the Madras Presidency could build a dam on the Periyar river inside Travancore and send its waters eastward to the arid districts of Madurai and Ramnad. After independence, this agreement served as the legal foundation of the protracted water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
