Former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa was arrested and remanded in judicial custody in a corruption case over the purchase of colour televisions.

After the AIADMK's defeat in 1996, the new DMK government filed several corruption cases relating to Jayalalithaa's first term. On 7 December 1996, after her anticipatory bail plea was rejected, she was arrested in the colour TV case, which alleged kickbacks in the purchase of televisions for village panchayats. She spent about a month in judicial custody. A separate disproportionate assets case, filed in 1996, led to her conviction in 2014. She was acquitted in the colour TV case in 2000.
