After the Supreme Court restored V. K. Sasikala's conviction, AIADMK legislators chose Edappadi K. Palaniswami as Chief Minister.

In early February 2017 the AIADMK legislature party elected V. K. Sasikala as its leader, and O. Panneerselvam resigned and then publicly rebelled against her. On 14 February the Supreme Court restored the trial court's conviction in the disproportionate assets case, and Sasikala was sent to prison in Bengaluru. Her camp chose Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who was sworn in on 16 February 2017 and won a confidence vote two days later. Palaniswami served as Chief Minister until May 2021.
