AIADMK factions merge
· Chennai

The Palaniswami and Panneerselvam factions of the AIADMK reunited, with Panneerselvam becoming Deputy Chief Minister.
After months of rivalry, the factions led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami and O. Panneerselvam merged in August 2017. Panneerselvam was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister and became the party's coordinator, with Palaniswami as joint coordinator. The merged party later removed Sasikala and her nephew T. T. V. Dhinakaran from party posts. Dhinakaran went on to win the R. K. Nagar by-election as an independent in December 2017 and founded the Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam in 2018.
