Winning a second term in a row, the AIADMK became the first party in power in Tamil Nadu to be returned to office since 1984.

Fighting the 2016 Assembly election mostly without allies, the AIADMK secured a majority, and J. Jayalalithaa took the oath as Chief Minister on 23 May 2016. No ruling party in Tamil Nadu had been voted back since 1984. Under Karunanidhi, with M. K. Stalin leading its campaign, the DMK emerged as a strong opposition. A third front made up of parties such as the DMDK and MDMK did not win any seats.
