The AIADMK alliance won a large majority and J. Jayalalithaa became Chief Minister for the third time; the DMDK became the main opposition.

The AIADMK-led alliance, which included the DMDK and Left parties, defeated the DMK alliance in the 2011 Assembly election. Jayalalithaa was sworn in as Chief Minister on 16 May 2011. The DMK fell to third place and Vijayakanth's DMDK became the principal opposition party. Price rises, power cuts and the 2G case were major issues in the campaign.
