The AIADMK general council made Edappadi K. Palaniswami interim general secretary and expelled O. Panneerselvam.

A dispute over single leadership ended the AIADMK's dual coordinator system. At a general council meeting on 11 July 2022, Palaniswami was elected interim general secretary and O. Panneerselvam was expelled from the party. Supporters of the two leaders clashed outside the party headquarters in Chennai the same day. Palaniswami was formally declared general secretary in 2023 after court rulings went in his favour.
