Udhayanidhi Stalin's remarks on Sanatana Dharma
· Chennai

Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's call to eradicate Sanatana Dharma drew national controversy and court cases.
On 2 September 2023, while addressing a conference in Chennai, Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin likened Sanatana Dharma to diseases such as malaria and dengue and said it should be eradicated rather than merely opposed, arguing that it was opposed to social justice and equality. The remarks drew strong criticism from many political leaders, particularly in the BJP, and complaints were filed in several states. On 22 September 2023 the Supreme Court issued notice to the Tamil Nadu government and Udhayanidhi on a petition about the remarks. In March 2024 the Supreme Court rebuked him, observing that as a minister he should have been mindful of the consequences of his statements.
