Violence at Kaniyamoor school over student's death

· Kallakurichi

Protests over the death of a Class 12 student at a private residential school in Kallakurichi district turned violent.

On 13 July 2022 a Class 12 student was found dead at the hostel of a private matriculation school at Kaniyamoor near Chinnasalem in Kallakurichi district. Her family disputed the police view that she had died by suicide. On 17 July hundreds of protesters stormed the school, set fire to school buses and vehicles and clashed with the police, injuring several officers. Prohibitory orders were imposed, the school's management and two teachers were arrested, and the case was transferred to the CB-CID. The Madras High Court ordered a second post-mortem and the formation of a special team to identify those involved in the violence.
