44th Chess Olympiad in Mamallapuram

· Mamallapuram

India hosted the Chess Olympiad for the first time, at Mamallapuram near Chennai, with Tamil Nadu organising it at short notice.

The 44th Chess Olympiad was held at Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) from late July to 9 August 2022, the first time India hosted the event. Tamil Nadu took on the organisation after the event was moved from Russia. India's second open team, helped by a strong run from 16-year-old D. Gukesh, and India's first women's team both won bronze medals. Tamil Nadu, the home of Viswanathan Anand and many grandmasters, used the event to promote chess and tourism.
