Arrests in Pollachi exposed a gang accused of sexually assaulting and blackmailing many women, causing statewide outrage and protests.
In early 2019, a complaint by a college student in Pollachi led to the arrest of men accused of running a ring that sexually assaulted women and extorted them using recorded videos. Four accused were arrested in March 2019 and booked under the Goondas Act, and a local functionary of an AIADMK wing was arrested for allegedly assaulting the complainant's brother. The case caused widespread protests and was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which made further arrests in January 2021. The victims included students and working women from the region.
