Pallikaranai marsh, Karikili and Vedanthangal bird sanctuaries and other Tamil Nadu wetlands were added to the list of Ramsar sites.

Point Calimere had been Tamil Nadu's only Ramsar wetland since 2002. On 8 April 2022 the Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest, the Karikili Bird Sanctuary and the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary were designated wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Other Tamil Nadu sites designated in 2022 included the Udhayamarthandapuram and Vaduvoor bird sanctuaries, and more were added in later years. Tamil Nadu came to have the highest number of Ramsar sites of any Indian state.
