The state launched a conservation programme for its state animal, the Nilgiri tahr, covering grassland restoration, radio-collaring and monitoring.

The Nilgiri tahr is an ungulate endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and the southern Western Ghats, and it is the state animal of Tamil Nadu. In 2022 the Government of Tamil Nadu launched Project Nilgiri Tahr to conserve the species. The programme includes the restoration of montane grasslands, radio-collaring and population monitoring, and plans for captive breeding and reintroduction. The state also declared 7 October as Nilgiri Tahr Day.
