Mukurthi National Park created to protect the Nilgiri tahr

The montane grasslands and sholas of Mukurthi in the Nilgiris, a wildlife sanctuary since 1982, were upgraded to a national park.
Mukurthi, on the Nilgiri plateau bordering Kerala, contains montane grasslands and shola forests that are home to the Nilgiri tahr, the state animal of Tamil Nadu. The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary on 3 August 1982. It was upgraded to a national park on 15 October 1990 to protect the tahr, its keystone species. The park also shelters the Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, Nilgiri marten and Nilgiri langur, and is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
