Neduvasal protests against hydrocarbon extraction

Villagers of Neduvasal in Pudukkottai district protested against a central plan to extract hydrocarbons from farmland.

In February 2017 the Union government cleared hydrocarbon extraction at small oil and gas fields, including one at Neduvasal in Pudukkottai district. Farmers and residents feared that drilling would pollute groundwater and farmland. The village became the centre of a sustained agitation joined by students and farm groups from the Cauvery delta. The protests fed into wider opposition to methane and hydrocarbon projects in the delta.
