Green tribunal hears challenge to the Theni neutrino observatory

Acting on a petition against the environmental clearance for the India-based Neutrino Observatory in Theni district, the National Green Tribunal issued notices.
The India-based Neutrino Observatory was to be an underground laboratory in the Bodi West Hills Reserved Forest close to Pottipuram in Theni district, and it obtained environment and forest clearance in October 2010. Residents of the area and political figures such as Vaiko resisted it, citing risks to the Western Ghats ecosystem and to water sources. Responding to a petition against the clearance, the southern bench of the National Green Tribunal sent notices to the central and state governments on 20 February 2015. Permission to start building at the site was never settled, and the project did not go ahead there as intended.
