Vengaivayal drinking water tank contamination

· Pudukkottai

Human faeces were found in an overhead water tank serving Dalit families in Vengaivayal village of Pudukkottai district.

On 26 December 2022 human faeces were found in an overhead drinking water tank built under a combined water supply scheme in Vengaivayal village, Pudukkottai district, which served Dalit residents. The incident caused nationwide outrage as an instance of caste-based humiliation, and the investigation was transferred to the CB-CID. In January 2025 the CB-CID filed a charge sheet naming three men from the Dalit community, citing personal enmity as the motive. The charge sheet was criticised by the VCK, the CPI(M) and opposition parties, several of whom demanded a CBI probe.
