Paramakudi police firing
Police opened fire on Dalits protesting at Paramakudi on the Immanuel Sekaran memorial day, and the death toll rose to seven.
On 11 September 2011 Dalits gathered at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district for the anniversary of the death of Immanuel Sekaran, a Dalit leader killed in 1957. News that the police had detained leader John Pandian on his way to the memorial led to protests and road blockades, and the police opened fire. The death toll rose to seven. Human rights groups disputed the official account that the police acted in self-defence, and the government ordered a judicial inquiry.
