Students at government and aided schools and colleges started receiving free laptops from the AIADMK government.

Free laptops promised in the AIADMK's 2011 manifesto began to be handed out by the Tamil Nadu government on 15 September 2011, C. N. Annadurai's birth anniversary. Eligible recipients were students of government and government-aided higher secondary schools, polytechnics, engineering colleges and arts and science colleges. ELCOT, the state electronics corporation, bought the machines. Some criticised the expense, and one petition before the Supreme Court called the scheme an inducement to voters.
