Fee support for first-generation graduates

· Chennai

The state announced a scholarship to pay tuition and other fees of first graduates in a family who join professional courses.

In 2010 the Karunanidhi government announced a scholarship scheme to pay the tuition and other fees of 'first graduates', students who are the first in their family to reach college, for any professional course. It built on an earlier initiative of his 1996-2001 government offering free education for the first graduate in a family. Combined with the end of entrance tests, it was intended to widen access to engineering and other professional courses. Rural students and women were among the main beneficiaries.
