Thane, a very severe cyclonic storm, crossed the coast between Cuddalore and Puducherry, wrecking homes, crops and trees.

Late in December 2011 Cyclone Thane developed over the Bay of Bengal and strengthened into a very severe cyclonic storm. In the early hours of 30 December 2011 it came ashore on the northern Tamil Nadu coast between Cuddalore and Puducherry, and it lost strength quickly afterwards. The heaviest damage was in Cuddalore and Puducherry, where trees, houses, power lines, crops and cashew and jackfruit plantations suffered extensively. In Cuddalore district, relief and repair efforts went on for months.
