Western Ghats inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Western Ghats mountain range, which runs through western Tamil Nadu including the Nilgiris and Anamalai hills, became a World Heritage Site.
The Western Ghats run parallel to India's west coast for about 1,600 km through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and meet the Eastern Ghats in the Nilgiris. The range is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, rich in endemic plants and animals. India applied to UNESCO for its listing in 2006, and the region was declared a World Heritage Site in 2012. The hills of western Tamil Nadu, including the Nilgiris, Anamalai and Agasthyamalai ranges, are part of the range.
