The Government of India declared the Sathyamangalam wildlife sanctuary in Erode district the fourth tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu.

Sathyamangalam Forest Division, where the Western and Eastern Ghats meet, was declared a wildlife sanctuary from 3 November 2008 and enlarged in 2011. Camera-trap and DNA surveys found a significant tiger population, and the state proposed tiger reserve status. In March 2013 the Government of India declared it the fourth tiger reserve in the state, after Mudumalai, Anamalai and Kalakkad Mundanthurai. The forests were once the base of the brigand Veerappan.
