Cyclone Nivar makes landfall near Marakkanam

Cyclone Nivar crossed the north Tamil Nadu coast near Marakkanam, flooding parts of Chennai during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cyclone Nivar made landfall on the north coastal Tamil Nadu coast between Puducherry and Chennai, close to Marakkanam, around midnight on 25 November 2020. The state government declared a statewide holiday on 25 November and evacuated people from vulnerable areas. Intense rain caused waterlogging in Chennai, and Chembarambakkam Lake released surplus water for the first time in five years. The cyclone struck while the state was still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
