The Governor assented to a law reserving 7.5 percent of medical seats for students who studied in government schools.

In September 2020 the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a bill providing 7.5 percent horizontal reservation in undergraduate medical, dental and Indian medicine courses for students who studied in government schools. With the Governor's assent delayed, the Palaniswami government issued an executive order on 29 October so admissions could proceed. Governor Banwarilal Purohit gave assent on 30 October 2020 after receiving the Solicitor General's legal opinion. The measure was a response to the low number of government school students securing medical seats after NEET was introduced.
