Assembly passes NEET exemption bill
· Chennai
The Assembly passed a bill to admit students to medical courses on Class 12 marks instead of NEET, and re-passed it after the Governor returned it.
Based on the report of a committee headed by Justice A. K. Rajan, the DMK government introduced a bill in September 2021 to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET for undergraduate medical admissions. The Assembly passed it on 13 September 2021. Governor R. N. Ravi returned the bill in February 2022, and the Assembly re-passed it on 8 February 2022, after which it was sent to the President. In April 2025 Chief Minister Stalin told the Assembly that the President had withheld assent, and the issue remained a central point of the state's dispute with the Governor and the Union government.
