COVID-19 pandemic reaches Tamil Nadu

· Chennai

Tamil Nadu reported its first COVID-19 case in March 2020; the pandemic brought lockdowns and two severe waves.

Tamil Nadu confirmed its first COVID-19 case in Chennai in early March 2020. The state imposed lockdowns from late March along with the national lockdown, and Chennai's Koyambedu market became a major cluster in May 2020. The second wave in April and May 2021 caused a sharp rise in cases and deaths and shortages of oxygen beds. Large-scale vaccination followed in 2021.
