A volunteer-led programme was launched to help school children recover learning lost during COVID-19 school closures.

Chief Minister M. K. Stalin launched the 'Illam Thedi Kalvi' (education at the doorstep) scheme on 19 October 2021. Volunteers, mostly women, taught school children in their own neighbourhoods for about 90 minutes a day. The programme aimed to make up for learning losses caused by the long closure of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was described as one of India's largest volunteer-based education programmes.
