Mayiladuthurai became the 38th district of Tamil Nadu, ending the discontiguous shape of Nagapattinam district.

Mayiladuthurai district was created out of Nagapattinam district in 2020, with Mayiladuthurai town as its headquarters. The division ended Nagapattinam's status as the only discontiguous district in Tamil Nadu. It was the last of several new districts created by the Palaniswami government in 2019 and 2020. The district includes Sirkazhi, Tharangambadi and the temple town of Vaitheeswaran Koil.
