On 24 August 2021, Kumbakonam, which had been a municipality since 1866, became a municipal corporation.

Made a municipality in 1866, Kumbakonam was later classed as a special-grade municipality. It gained the status of a municipal corporation, with 48 wards, on 24 August 2021. On that same day a number of other towns, Sivakasi among them, were also declared corporations. A temple town in the Cauvery delta, Kumbakonam hosts the Mahamaham festival.
