Ramnad (Mudukulathur) riots
Violent caste clashes broke out in Ramanathapuram district between Thevar and Dalit communities after the 1957 elections.
The Ramnad riots, also called the Mudukulathur riots, were a series of violent clashes between July and September 1957 in Ramanathapuram district and nearby parts of southern Tamil Nadu. The violence pitted Maravars and others supporting the Forward Bloc against Devendrakula Velalar (Pallar) Dalits who largely supported the Congress. It followed tensions over the 1957 elections and growing Dalit assertion. The murder of Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran in September 1957 intensified the violence, and the police were deployed in large numbers.
