Seshasamudram violence over a Dalit temple car procession
A dominant-caste mob attacked the Dalit colony of Seshasamudram and burned a temple car on the eve of its procession.
Dalits of Seshasamudram village in Sankarapuram taluk, then in Viluppuram district, had built a Mariamman temple and its car, but for years were refused permission for a procession because of opposition from Vanniyars. A peace committee agreed that the procession could be held on 16 August 2015. On the night of 15 August a mob attacked police, burned the temple car with petrol bombs and set fire to houses in the Dalit colony. About 15 houses were burned and around 40 Dalits were injured.
