The first phase of the Chennai Outer Ring Road, built to divert traffic around the city, was opened to the public.

Work on the Chennai Outer Ring Road was launched in 2010 under the DMK government, and phase I was implemented by GMR. Phase I was opened to the public on 29 August 2014 by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. The road links the major highways radiating from Chennai and was intended to keep heavy traffic away from the city and support development on the periphery. Phase II was inaugurated on 9 February 2021.
