Tamil Nadu Premier League launched

A Twenty20 league with franchises based on districts was launched by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to showcase local players.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association unveiled plans for a state Twenty20 league in April 2016. It hoped the league would make up for the lack of major T20 cricket in the state and give home-grown players a stage. Bids for franchise rights were invited in May 2016, and the first season took place the same year. Held every year since, the Tamil Nadu Premier League has served as a route for players into the IPL and the Indian team.
