Aged 12 years, 7 months and 17 days, Chennai's D. Gukesh earned the grandmaster title, at that point the second-youngest ever to do so.

Born in Chennai in 2006, Gukesh Dommaraju gained the International Master title in March 2017. He reached grandmaster status on 15 January 2019, aged 12 years, 7 months and 17 days. Only Sergey Karjakin had done it younger at that time, making Gukesh the second-youngest grandmaster in history. He later won the 2024 Candidates Tournament and took the world championship in December 2024.
