Pension scheme for destitute transgender persons

· Chennai

Jayalalithaa announced a monthly pension of Rs. 1,000 for transgender persons above 40 living in poverty.

In August 2012 Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced the Pension Scheme for Destitute Transgender, giving a monthly pension of Rs. 1,000 to transgender persons above 40 living in poverty. The government allotted Rs. 1.17 crore for the scheme. Activists welcomed it as support for elderly transgender persons, who had few means of earning a living. It added to the state's earlier measures, including the Transgender Welfare Board set up in 2008.
