Pudukkottai was made a separate district, combining the former princely state with Aranthangi taluk of Thanjavur district.

After its merger with India in 1948 the former Pudukkottai state had been a division of Tiruchirappalli district. In 1974 the government formed a separate Pudukkottai district. The coastal Aranthangi taluk was detached from Thanjavur district and added to the new district. Pudukkottai town became the headquarters.
