Pudukkottai princely state merges with the Indian Union

Pudukkottai, the princely state of the Thondaimans, joined India and was made a division of Tiruchirappalli district.
From the late seventeenth century the Thondaiman dynasty governed Pudukkottai, the sole princely state in the Tamil country. Raja Rajagopala Thondaiman, crowned as a boy in 1928, was the final ruler. Following independence, the state merged into the Indian Union on 3 April 1948, becoming a division of Tiruchirappalli district within Madras Province. In 1974 it was once more made a district of its own.
