The Central Leather Research Institute was founded in Madras as a laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

The Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) was founded in Madras on 24 April 1948 as a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. It was one of several national laboratories set up in the years after independence to support industrialisation. The institute served the leather and tanning industry, which was concentrated in northern Tamil Nadu around Vellore, Ambur and Vaniyambadi. It went on to become one of the largest leather research institutes in the world by research output.
