The Madras legislature outlawed the dedication of girls to temples as devadasis, ending a long reform campaign.

The Madras Devadasis (Prevention of Dedication) Act was enacted on 9 October 1947 under the ministry of O. P. Ramaswamy Reddiyar. It made the dedication of girls and women to Hindu temples as devadasis illegal throughout the province. The measure was the culmination of a campaign led by the physician and legislator Muthulakshmi Reddi, who had introduced a Devadasi Abolition Bill years earlier. The Act is regarded as a landmark of social reform legislation in the Madras region.
