Madurai became a municipal corporation, the first one set up in Tamil Nadu since independence.

Madurai had been made a municipality on 1 November 1866 under the Town Improvement Act of 1865. The Madurai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1971, raised it to a municipal corporation on 1 May 1971. After Madras, it was the state's first municipal corporation, and the first to be created after independence. In terms of population, Madurai is still among the biggest corporations in the state.
