Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Gandhi Memorial Museum in the Rani Mangammal palace at Madurai.

After Gandhi's assassination in 1948, the Mahatma Gandhi National Memorial Trust raised public funds for memorials. The palace of Rani Mangammal in Madurai was renovated to house a museum, which Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated on 15 April 1959. It is one of five Gandhi Sangrahalayas in the country. Its exhibits include part of the blood-stained garment Gandhi wore when he was killed.
