Pandithurai Thevar founds the Fourth Tamil Sangam in Madurai
· Madurai
Pandithurai Thevar, a member of the Ramnad royal family, founded the Madurai Tamil Sangam, known as the Fourth Tamil Sangam, to promote Tamil learning.
When Pandithurai Thevar came to Madurai in 1901, he found that important Tamil works were not available even in the city associated with the ancient Tamil Sangams. On 24 May 1901 he held a meeting with Tamil poets and scholars at Madurai Sethupathi High School to establish a new Tamil Sangam. The Madurai Tamil Sangam collected manuscripts, ran a library and published the Tamil journal Sentamil. It was one of the first modern Tamil literary academies.
