After years of manuscript research, U. V. Swaminatha Iyer published an edition of the Sangam anthology Purananuru with notes.

U. V. Swaminatha Iyer collected and edited palm-leaf manuscripts of classical Tamil works. After publishing the Silappatikaram in 1891, he began work on the Purananuru in 1892, using manuscripts that included one found at Mithilaipatti. Many poems were incomplete, and he used references in the Tolkappiyam commentary to reconstruct them. He published the Purananuru in 1894 with notes on the places, rivers and people named in the poems. He then turned to the Manimekalai.
