Subhas Chandra Bose received in Madurai

After launching the Forward Bloc, Subhas Chandra Bose visited Madurai, where Muthuramalinga Thevar organised his reception.

Muthuramalinga Thevar backed Subhas Chandra Bose in his contest with Gandhi's candidate for the Congress presidency in 1939. After Bose resigned the presidency and launched the Forward Bloc on 22 June 1939, Thevar, disillusioned with the Congress for not revoking the Criminal Tribes Act, joined it. Thevar played the key role in arranging a large reception for Bose in Madurai on 6 September 1939. The Forward Bloc remained an important force in the southern districts.
