Actor Vijayakanth launched the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam at Madurai.

Film actor Vijayakanth founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) at a conference in Madurai in September 2005. The party presented itself as an alternative to both the DMK and the AIADMK. It won a sizeable vote share in the 2006 election, and in the 2011 election, contesting in alliance with the AIADMK, it won enough seats for Vijayakanth to become Leader of the Opposition. Its strength declined in later elections.
