Coimbatore becomes a municipal corporation

Coimbatore, a municipality since 1866, was raised to municipal corporation status, becoming the third such body in Tamil Nadu.
Coimbatore first gained a municipality in 1866 under the Town Improvements Act of 1865, and industrialist Robert Stanes served as its first chairman. In 1981 the Coimbatore and Singanallur municipalities were combined to form a municipal corporation, only the third in Tamil Nadu. The corporation's boundaries were widened substantially in 2011. By area, it has since grown into the largest corporation in the state.
